Mercury
Effect began as an experimental live band featuring the percussion work
of Thomas Faulds. The group was seeking to find a common ground among
jazz, avant-garde improvisation, and IDM. Eventually the group disbanded.
Thomas moved to Chicago, continued solo, and Mercury Effect was born.
Fostering an atmosphere that relies on sound design and intricate rhythm
programming, Thomas creates a fusion of IDM, Dub, and Jungle. The effect
is that of a distinctly modern sound, providing musical clues to our modern
landscape. In the process, Mercury Effect engulfs the listener in an entirely
different world of its own making.
There are many elements at work within this music. All sounds are created
from scratch, either sampled from the envirement or synthezised inside
a computer. Sounds are deconstructed and built up using an immense variety
of techniques and equipment. The intricate drum programming comes from
hours of intense editing to create a dense tapestry of glitchy, brain
tickling rhythms. Atmospheres are created through a dub-like process of
improvising live with a mixing board and an effects unit. With this combination,
a dynamic, alien, yet organic soundspace is acheived.
In short, Mercury Effect is a revolution in sound. This is the soundtrack
to a confrontation between innerspace and outerspace. With this music,
a paradigm shift is here. Music version 2.0. Mercury Effect is here to
turn your entire world upside down. You won't walk away the same.
