Gareth Clarke is a Manchester resident and made his debut with a flurry
of classic IDM programming tricks up his sleeve and a wealth of dizzying
breakcore rhythms primed to wreck your head. Opening track 'Butterworth
Lane Write-Offs' has been given an airing by Mary Anne Hobbs on the Breezeblock
recently, and it makes for an excellent showcase of Clarke's talents,
featuring some seriously flashy beat edits and breakneck jazz-infused
melodics. Next piece, 'Afterimage' raises the stakes further with truly
blistering high speed Squarepusher-isms, which sets the tone for this
album nicely. Revealing a more tempered approach to his compositions,
more spacious tracks like 'Cerise' and 'Variegated Civic Mucilage' add
some welcome texture, but never let up on the album's relentlessly inventive
approach to reinterpreting the IDM template.
